What is an ewe?

Ok, if I were guessing wildly i would think it is a tree kind (probably cause it sounds kind of like yew) or maybe. . . Gee I really don't know, and till now I didn't even know that word existed but it does.
But then I got the homework to research what it means and here I am.
The actual meaning is (copy and paste from: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ewe) :

a female sheep, especially when fully mature.
